Fiona T

Fiona T think I missed a trick here starting with one so minimising chances to score with a 9, but still well ahead of all the people who didn't read the instructions :D

Ian Volante

Ian Volante Don't rub it in...

Jon Stammers

Jon Stammers Nightmare!!

Mark O'Regan

Mark O'Regan Dave, one question please:
Can I start with a 9 (however unlikely that would be) and then R2 would be a 1, R3 a 2 letter word etc?

David Holmes

David Holmes So just to confirm, you can start a new chain with any length word? Does that include in R1?

Mark Jeary-Fairbairn

Mark Jeary-Fairbairn Cannot believe how well that went. I have been so used to being the fourth wheel this would have almost got our team in a winning position...if there were more than two of us playing... ;)

Mark Jeary-Fairbairn

Mark Jeary-Fairbairn *three of us....

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Mark / David - yes, you can start on any letter word you want. The dream would be a 9 letter word in round 1, but there is an element of chance to whatever strategy you take.

Jon Stammers

Jon Stammers Ah well, nice to start learning the strategy needed long after you've played and messed it up entirely!

Dan Southwell

Dan Southwell well what a complete disaster, I thought I'd clicked on the daily duel so just cracked on playing a normal game and didnt clock til the end! Sorry teammates what a numpty...

Sean D

Sean D not that it matters , but looks like I got assigned 2 games here

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Thanks Sean. Admin mistake I think

Ravi Choudhary

Ravi Choudhary Just to clarify - if you were to get a 9 at any point, breaking the previous chain but starting a new one, would you get an albatross and a triple bogey at the same time - effectively a par round?

Jon Stammers

Jon Stammers I say Ravi is pretty much cheating by trying to properly UNDERSTAND the rules before playing!! ;) lol

Ravi Choudhary

Ravi Choudhary One last question (hopefully) - does getting an albatross depend on making a chain of 9 valid words?

Show all comments
Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Ravi - no, you don't need to link 9 words, you just need to get a 9 (but it has to be a part of the chain as mentioned in the notes). You don't get a Albatross for random 9 letter words unless they in order.

Dan Southwell

Dan Southwell Dave - sorry to be a pain, although I am trying to salvage something from my cock up!

Can you check my scores please as I'm not sure they're all correct? The way I scored it I should have got -3 on the tenth for my 9 letter word, but then probably a +3 on the 11th.

Perhaps controversially though I'd like to challenge my opening +3 for an invlaid word, as it doesn't seem to state this in the rules, only that you receive a tripley bogey 3 if you break teh chain. However there was no chain to break! Mulligan on the first maybe?????!!

Fiona T

Fiona T I'm confused too - I can't work out how Florence got -21 - presumably only 1st 18 holes are in play?

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Dan - in R10 you played a 9 letter word after starting a new chain in the previous round with a 7, so to keep the chain going you should have played an 8 letter word, so your 9 scores a +3. Fiona - Florence scored -16 in R3, the score of -21 is her tournament total score including R1 and R2.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Dan - re: your invalid word in R1, perhaps it wasn't clear, but in my example game in the notes, in R18 there is an example of a +3 'invalid word fail' as opposed to a chain-break fail. In all honesty, I did think it would be assumed that declaring invalid words would be punished with the worst possible score as per all other rounds in the tournament so far. Otherwise these notes sections in tournaments are going to become encyclopaedic in length!

Tourney round: APGA Tour 2025: Event 7: LIV - Dallas - Round 3

<< Event 7: LIV - Dallas - Round 2 | Event 8: PGA - The Open - Round 1 >>

Notes from the organizer: Matthew B leads the way on -7 as we head into the final round. No surprise that Tom C is chasing hard though on -5 alongside Florence who is seeking a first title of the season. A lot are still in contention with a good round.

In the team event, 4Aces are on for another title, but it's tight with Range Goats just a shot back and others still lurking.

In the final round, we tackle a Goat Attack with a variation on the scoring system. Building your round is the aim.

Your declarations should increase by one letter each round. If you follow this rule, you’ll continue scoring birdies. If you break the chain, you’ll hit a triple bogey and start again. The first valid word in the link will always score you a birdie. If you successfully link the chain with a 9-letter word, that word will score you an Albatross (-3) and to continue the chain in the next round after a 9, you’ll need to declare a 1-letter word.

Here’s an example game:

R1 - A -1
R2 - BE -1
R3 - LOW -1
R4 - WENT -1
R5 - AMIGO -1
R6 - LATENT -1
R7 - BLATANT -1
R8 - HOMELY (INVALID CHAIN FAIL) +3
R9 - AND -1
R10 - WAND -1
R11 - SHARE -1
R12 - PLACED -1
R13 - EQUATOR -1
R14 - PITCHING -1
R15 - RELATIONS (VALID NINE LINK) -3
R16 - I (START THE CHAIN FROM ONE) -1
R17 - AT -1
R18 - NOH (INVALID WORD FAIL) +3

Round score: -12

Rounds 19 and 20 are play-off holes. They don’t follow the above system. Whoever gets the longest word wins the play-off.

Good luck!
