Dave Kempshall To clarify a bit of a typo there. It should read: "If you declare a word shorter than 4 letters long or an invalid word" so basically, keep your words to 4 or above length (and valid) to keep scoring.
David Holmes Potentially some VERY big points on offer in this round compared to previous...
Dave Kempshall That's the idea David :)
Trevor Potts I'll have a think about how to spreadsheet this 😂 have a theory in my head but will see if Google allows it.
Dave Kempshall Trevor - I believe Fiona managed to do something in a similar scrabble themed tournament a while back, thanks for the effort / thought :)
Fiona T Yep I've still got mine - can let you have a copy when I'm home (Tuesday)
Johnny Canuck CSW =/= culled OED =/= the OED I remember
Andres S. Bummed that the only round my score could end on was on one that I couldn't pick letters on, and even if so I got nothing but three-letter words
David Holmes So ZARI is fine but ZARIS is not?! Every day a school day with Susie.
David Holmes And I didn't even read the rules properly so was wasting my time on the subsequent rounds :-(
Johnny Canuck Personally, I don’t feel like offering a CSW-valid, OED-invalid word should be a crashout in this round - but I’m not in charge
Dave Kempshall I will take it on board for next year, but sadly can't alter the rules midway through a round.
David Holmes Knowing how exhaustingly capricious Susie is when it comes to plurals I should have played more conservatively. Honestly didn't think that would be a controversial or unlikely plural though. A lesson learned.
Maria Chandler Just so I am clear - only words of maximum four letters are allowed, right:
| |
Matthew Brockwell Yes minimum of 4 letters.
Dave Kempshall Badly worded, sorry Maria. Matthew is right, it's minimum of 4 letters.
Sean D I think Maria deserves another go here, the description is incorrect and comment correcting it is no longer visible without scrolling up
Dave Kempshall I've already messaged Maria, Sean.
Martin Hurst I think Maria should be given the win as the only one who went by the rules ;) I certainly didn't notice the error :)
Show all comments | |
Andy SC I say everyone should get another go :)
Dave Kempshall Martin - this certainly crossed my mind :)
Maria Chandler Ha ha, thanks! It’s the lawyer in me, I actually read the T&Cs!
| |
Sarah Binns I did alright in that one!
Dan Spinks a simple 200 point handicap for anyone with cappleman in their name will keep everyone competitive |
Notes from the organizer: As the pressure rises, Matthew B is the first of our leaders to blink with an early exit from R5 to fall back into the chasing pack. That leaves Florence (682), T-Cap (661) and Roger (621) as our leaders and the only three competitors to have all posted 100+ in each of the first five rounds.
Defending champion Tass also sees his solid progress halted by an early R5 exit to drop in to 8th place. In between are a tightly bunched group featuring Mike L, Matthew B and Wesley all lying in wait should our leaders stumble and open the door.

We’re now entering the all-new rounds for this year with a Junior LA.
Round 6 rewards your Scrabble ability. Your score for each round will be the total each word would score in Scrabble rather than Apterous (we’ll be using the usual dictionary as CSW isn’t available in this format in tournaments).
If you fail to declare a word of shorter than 4 letters or an invalid word, your scoring will end.
JINX would be worth 18 as opposed to 4.
QUAIL gets you 14, not 5 etc.
Any 7 letter words will be treated as a double word score.
In addition, in four rounds, there will be special letter ‘squares’…
ROUND 5 = Double letter score on the 1st letter of your word
ROUND 10 = Double letter on the 3rd letter of your word
ROUND 15 = Triple letter score on the 4th letter of your word
ROUND 20 = Triple letter score on the 6th letter of your word
(This one may test your superhuman spreadsheet skills Trevor ;))
Best of luck everyone!
