Matthew Brockwell Just to check, 9s still score 18 as per usual right?
Adrian Fletcher Damn you Quora!
David Holmes This was fun!
Dave Kempshall They do Matthew. You score (assuming you play all the way through) will be your Apto game score + up to 20 for the bonus points.
Dan Southwell Very happy with that to finish :)
| |
Dave Kempshall Your welcome Dan. Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed it. We'll return next November :)
Adam Dexter Damn you Prune - picking an impossible round :(
David Holmes Agree, this was a really fun and varied tournament. Annoyed with myself for ballsing up two of the rounds but that's all part of the challenge. Thank you for running it!
Tom B I know I messed up with QUAID on the 2nd round, but can I have 100 bonus points, please, for spotting THEREMINS in round 20?
Fiona T good fun as always dave, thank you!
Elwin Carlos Thanks for organising Dave! Great, fun, unique tournament. Must remember to read the rules properly next year! Scrabble round was a nice consolation prize though., 🙂
Adam Latchford this round really played with my mind, had trilobite one round but debated whether i wanted to waste the T or not (wasting it on a nine letter word no less!)
| |
Dave Kempshall Yes, I think it was a far more interesting finish than my previous idea of declaring words that contain letters only in alphabetical order. That really would have limited scores and essentially been an exercise in people researching common words that meet that criteria. 7 solid rounds to potentially expand upon into a slightly longer one next year.
Richard Barnett Really bad finish for me! But a very enjoyable tournament, love all the variations. Thanks for organising (and painstaking scoring of all the rounds) Dave
Dave Kempshall Thanks guys. Richard - Trevor made it extremely easy. I made the main spreadsheet, but he kept feeding me spreadsheets per round which effectively meant all I needed to do was copy and paste the game URL and it told me the score.
Richard Barnett Very impressive!
Martin Hurst Cheers Dave - love these quirky tournaments. Hope we see more of them :)
Sean D Cheers Dave, great tournament. I wonder if we could do with tweaking the scoring though. One bit of bad luck or misjudgment in the first couple of rounds of any game and the tournament is over for you.
Fiona T yep - perhaps a -point penalty for an error would work?
Dave Kempshall Good suggestions guys. I agree and is something I'd already thought about :)
Matthew Brockwell Yes thanks for the fun quick tourney. I agree it was a "don't screw up" tourney rather than take chances, and would prefer a point penalty too. Missing MAIM (gettable) and MAYA (not gettable for me) costing 200+ points seems harsh.
Dave Kempshall I think my assumption (wrongly) was that everyone would make a mistake / get unlucky at least once and by that measure if you take Florence and T-Cap out of the equation then it is actually quite close between those who made errors and those who played safer. Sadly, you can't account for two absolute quality performers, but that is often the case in a lot of tournaments to be fair.
Trevor MacEoin Great tournament Dave. really enjoyed taking part apart from having to chicken dreamiest in the last game :) . thanks for organising.
Roger Peak Thanks for organising this Dave and making it such a thought provoking type of challenge ! I agree with having a points penalty for not following the format so that everyone can keep competing. One other suggestion is that if you want an 'order/order' type of round then Aegilops is very good for that. Congratulations Florence and well played - you deserve to go into the Hall of Champions !

Fi Thorne Brilliant tourney, thanks for organising Dave!
Florence C-L Thanks for organising Dave, I really enjoy tournaments with extra restrictions on rounds, and I guess this shows in my performance! Great fun :)
Tom Cappleman Really fun tourney Dave. And well done Florence, great consistency across it all.
Dave Kempshall You're welcome, I'll continue to evolve it. Very well played to both of you and congrats Florence on taking the title!
Adrian Fletcher Cheers for organising DAve |
Notes from the organizer: Florence (895) continues to lead the way as we head into the final round of the this year’s tournament, but T-Cap (869) is still snapping closely at her heels.
Roger continues his fine form in 3rd place with 807 points, but has fallen back a little on the leaders. Below that, a solid R6 from Wesley sees him move into medal contention 765.
Honourable mention to Elwin our leading scorer in R6, who posted MARQUES in R15 earning a cool 76 points for that word alone (Triple letter on the Q and double word for a seven letter word).
We finish with a slight change in the planned round as I felt the original I’d planned wasn’t strong enough for the finale.
It’s a Goat Attack and in the this round each of your 20 declarations must meet the following criteria:
1. Be at a valid word
2. Be at least 4 letters long
3. Each word you declare must begin with a unique / different letter (i.e. if you’ve played RELATION already, no other declaration should begin with an R).
If you fail to meet all of the above criteria in any round, you will ‘bomb out early’ and your game scoring will end. To be clear you DON’T have to play your words in alphabetical order, just 20 words each beginning with a unique, different letter of the alphabet.
There is a 10 point bonus for anyone playing words beginning with each of the five different vowels.
There is another 10 point bonus if you declare words beginning with both Q and J.
With it being Goatdown, you may have to be more strategic and try and use the less common letters early in order to see yourself all the way through to the end. Equally, you may have to do much of the bonus legwork on your own selected rounds as you can’t control Prune’s 9th letter selection. On Prune’s selections, it may come down to simply trying to find that 4 letter word to keep your game going.
Thanks to everyone for taking part this year. Special thanks to Trevor for making this year’s marking a whole lot easier with his spreadsheets and good luck to everyone in R7, especially our medal contenders!
