Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns To clarify, do they need to be apterous dictionary valid or just hypertouchdown valid?

Fiona T

Fiona T Says "valid words", so I assume the former :)

Fiona T

Fiona T Where do you stand on boroughs (e.g. Barking)

George Armstrong

George Armstrong Woof woof.

Or in human speak, that's fine.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Maybe bonus points for dog related places. Barking, Leeds, Chumleigh etc. I just love dogs.

George Armstrong

George Armstrong They love to Bury bones, but notoriously hate a Bath. Personally they get on my Wick. so it's a no from me ;) .

Andy SC

Andy SC There is a town in Orkney called St Margaret's Hope/South Ronaldsay. Locally it gets shortened to Hup and Hope, would this be valid?

Sean D

Sean D I've long thought a Geography dictionary would be super fun, but have never come close to even putting a proposal together. This is a nice start. Need to clarify multi-word entries though.... is MILTONKEYNES valid? STANDREWS , SAINTANDREWS?

George Armstrong

George Armstrong @Andy - everything I can find online refers to it as "The Hope/Hup", so seems like its falling into the Barnard Castle thing, as I wouldn't allow The so I can't allow Hope.

And on a similar point, @Sean words such as Saint won't count (and Milton, Keynes, or Miltonkeynes aren't valid anyway ;)

Basically if someone asked the question "Where do you live" and you could answer it with a single word then it'll count.

Sean D

Sean D I rushed in with my query before eading the rules properly :-) Looking for apto valid words which are also place names makes for a very small dictionary, but I guess that's part of the fun

George Armstrong

George Armstrong All I'll say is there are more options than you might think :)

Jack Worsley

Jack Worsley Would MALICE be accepted?

George Armstrong

George Armstrong Haha I'd love to say yes...

Callum Todd

Callum Todd What's the etiquette on this? Are we okay to hit and hope with offering words that sound like they might be towns in the hope they'll turn out to score points when checked? Or should we only declare words we are reasonably confident will score, with a specific town in mind?

Also is it within regulations for me to drive to Barnard Castle to check if it's valid?

George Armstrong

George Armstrong I played a practise game (so not saved) earlier. Scored 93 with 14 unique declarations. Tactically Callum I'd say go for the latter, although you've essentially got 4 weeks from now to play 3 games, so plenty of time for practice or a quick trawl through the Internet as I did last night.

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns Do you stop at villages or are we good with even smaller settlements like hamlets?

Important because https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocks,_Cornwall

Christy Cooper

Christy Cooper Haha loving the subtle dig in the first sentence :) I'm in!

George Armstrong

George Armstrong Yeah cocks is, naturally, good ;) . Cornwall seems to be good for weird town names - you've got Lizard too :D https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lizard_(village)

Fiona T

Fiona T Combine the two tourneys and the only acceptable answer is slough

Adam Latchford

Adam Latchford Arsenal - yay or nay?

George Armstrong

George Armstrong I've had 38 weeks of putting up with Arsenal...

Arsenal and Port Vale are famously the only football clubs not named after places and Arsenal Tube Station is in Highbury in Islington, it's a nay today

Mike Lee

Mike Lee Must the declaration be unique or could you repeatedly state the same town over and over again (provided it’s valid)?

George Armstrong

George Armstrong Yeah you can declare a word multiple times in any game, although there's no fun in declaring HAM 20 times ;)

Andy SC

Andy SC Would be more fun declaring HOLM 20 times :) Pronounced the same way as HAM

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier Pool: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pool-in-Wharfedale

George Armstrong

George Armstrong Pool is, as it turns out, less than a 30 minute drive from me... But the point still stands :)

Martyn Pegram

Martyn Pegram Does Cockermouth have a shortened name? Asking for a friend...

Tourney round: CountTown: Sign Ups Proper

<< Sign-Ups | Heats >>

Notes from the organizer: Hopefully we won't divide any opinions here... Making a play on words on Countdown, we've a simple premise to this tourney: you'll only score points if the valid words you declare are also the name of towns, cities or villages in the UK.

In the opening round, all players will get three Hypertouch Letters Attacks against Prune to rack up as big a combined score as possible. The top 8 players will advance to a Round Robin stage playing each other once, with rankings to be determined by wins then points after adjudication. (In the event that a game finishes level after adjudication it will be awarded as half a win). The top 2 will then play in a one game Grand Final to see who knows both their British geography and their Countdown dictionary.

A few technicalities to run over:

- Towns that are known by a short form name like Hull will be score points, despite the full name being Kingston-Upon-Hull.
- Words that form part of a town name that isn't commonly shortened such as the Castle in Barnard Castle will NOT score points.
- Words must be spelt correctly. Pool is valid in Countdown, but will NOT score points as Poole is the correct spelling of the town.

Sign ups will be open for two weeks, and players will then have two weeks after that for the first round of games.

Ran from: 22 May – 5 June 2022. Format: Hypertouch Letters Attack. Matches: One-off. Approved.
