Tourney round: APGA Tour 2026: T2: The Masters - Round 1

<< T1: The Players Championship - Round 4

Notes from the organizer: Magnolia Lane. Azaleas. Rae’s Creak. Amen Corner. Nerve-shredding wedge shots to the 12th on Sunday.

It’s time for the Masters at Augusta, arguably the most iconic competition and course in world golf (certainly my favourite).

Home to some of golf’s most enduring memories. Who can forget Adam Latchford - eyes glazed - claiming his first major in 2025? Dave Robjohns claiming the inaugural title in 2022, and then coming back and doing it all again in 2024 (with Bradley’s stunning comeback to pip Tom C in 2023 sandwiched in between).

The winners prize? A green jacket, surely the most sought-after item of clothing on earth. What could be rarer? Well, the fictional one you’ll be competing for throughout April.

Onto the tournament and, as always, you will compete over 4 rounds (4 attacks versus Prune). Your ‘golf round’ will comprise 18 holes (rounds 1-18, with rounds 19 and 20 discarded). On each hole you will score to par in line with a pre-defined scoring mechanic that will vary from round to round (and sometimes hole-to-hole).

The iconic trio of holes - 11th, 12th and 13th (affectionately known as Amen Corner) are a case in point and will be subject to some special criteria scoring to mirror the real-life pressure.

Newcomers are welcome (sign-ups will remain open until R1 is complete).

Round 1 is not about winning The Masters, it’s about not losing it. Most players will have a hairy hole or two. It’s about taking your chances and limiting the damage. So we play a Junior Conundrum Attack.

Scoring is as follows:
Correct solve that begins with a vowel - Birdie
Correct solve that begins with a consonant - Par
Unsolved (no buzz-in) - Bogey
Incorrect solve (buzz-in) - Double Bogey

Through Amen Corner (11th, 12th and 13th holes) your score will improve by one stroke should you buzz either exactly on the second or the half-second (e.g. buzz on 10.0 or 5.5). Doing this correctly with a word starting with a vowel will garner an eagle (-2), a word with a consonant will get a birdie (-1) or even buzzing incorrectly bang on will limit your damage to a bogey (+1). Non-buzzes not affected.

There is an element of luck with the vowel / consonant rule, but some of golf’s most famous victories have been soaked in good fortunate.

Rounds 19 and 20, as always, don’t count.

Good luck!
