Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns A schedule will be up at some point soon, just figuring out when I can fit in live events. If anybody is able to commit to running the odd live event (e.g. is free Tuesdays or Saturdays 8-10 sorta thing) and fancies getting on board with the tourney please drop me a message :)

Andy SC

Andy SC Could double up with ATP for the Tennis?

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns Sounds good - nearly asked about combining a few last year actually! Works well here since no ATP points for 'lympics. Happy to do however much is needed in organising :)

Andy SC

Andy SC Can just run it like normal ATP, just a case whether to do some sort of seeding or not.

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns So, with a little over a week to go until the games kick off, here's the provisional schedule for the 76 events in the 2021 Aptolympiad: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XARCkMOnvzwgvf9ex_0WLcnvWbr8V6p05qhxWpWmUtw/edit#gid=1727602891

There may be some minor changes to it over the coming weeks. Currently only 8 live events are scheduled due to uncertainty on availability but this will be a bare minimum - only the most interesting & unique ones are pencilled in for now :)

Despite the small increase in events, as promised it's a little less hectic than last time - most events are only for 1 member of a 3-4 player team - those nationalities will be drawn shortly after sign-ups close (and most who played in 2020 will keep their apto country allegiances)

Elwin Carlos

Elwin Carlos Hi Dave, just saw your message about live events - not entirely sure I'd be available for any of those. Is there a way to participate without committing to any of the live ones? If not, no worries, I'll just withdraw my entry. :)

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns Yep no worries - signing up here is basically for the ones put through the tourney system (so can play whenever), the live events are totally optional (and people who don’t sign up here can play them too) - they’ll just be whoever turns up on the day :)

Elwin Carlos

Elwin Carlos Ah fair enough, thanks for clarifying. I might as well stick around then! Cheers, Dave. :)

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Well I'm looking forward to this Dave. Looks awesome!

Dave Robjohns Cheers Dave! Last day for sign ups everyone - already got a few more than last year which is great and lots of new names - hope you all enjoy :)

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns Right - been a little bit busier tonight than expected so we'll be drawing teams when I'm home this (Friday 9th) evening. We have 43 entries - with Damo playing bots only that leaves 14 teams of 3 to be allocated and our opening events are 3v3 basketball (single conundrums) and the triathlon :)

The first chance to win any silverware comes on Saturday night as we take to the waters for some surfing - hope to see you there! (7:30 signups for 8pm start)

Tom Cappleman

Tom Cappleman Andy's moved the ATP Wimbledon tourney to Saturday (avoiding the Euros final), so you may want a different day/time

Andy SC

Andy SC @Tom I have informed Dave that I have realised of this scheduling conflict. Waiting to hear back from Dave.

Andy SC

Andy SC We've come to a compromise. The Weakest Link tournament will begin at 7pm and the ATP tournament will begin at 8:30pm with hopefully as little or no crossover at all. So a busy evening of tournament action. Think of it being like a cross between Super Saturday at the Olympics and Manic Monday at Wimbledon.

Tourney round: Aptolympics: Tokyo 2021: Sign-up round

Tokyo 2021: Event 1: 3v3 Basketball (Group Stage) >>

Notes from the organizer: Aptolympics is back for a second edition! We're still in Tokyo, where they're set to proceed with the globe's biggest sporting event next month despite the delightful pandemic still making waves around the world.

Once again I can promise something for everyone, with dozens of events across every variant and many many formats with laughably tenuous links to real Olympic events, backed up with a stupidly big google sheet because I'm addicted to spreadsheets.

Last year saw 50 contestants play almost 4,000 games of countdown, after which team Hungary (Sam Cappleman-Lynes, Andy SC, Robin M & Callum Carton) triumphed with 74 golds. This year I'll be taking things a little slower, with the tourney lasting 2 months from the time the torch reaches Tokyo (9th July) to the time the paralympics concludes (5th September).

We all have busier lives now (except me clearly) so the games will be toned down a little, with more events featuring just 1 member of a team. As with last year, please feel free to request not playing certain events (e.g. Spoilage, Duckdown, Letters/Numbers in general, human v human, bots) and I'll do my best to keep on top of all that!

Generally, for bot games, contestants will have a week to play, with more time afforded for human vs human games.

Here's last year's tourney page for a look at the general structure: https://www.apterous.org/to_meta.php?meta=5302

And if anybody wants to revisit the results, here's the spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19s4MNWHNXg5OFoU9sKFvzIcggZZ3--_YjqM1PDVd_DA/edit#gid=456916130

There's a lot I want to say here but this is starting to feel longer than my dissertation, so I'll wrap it up with a TL;DR:

All the countdown
Big fun
Medals for all (probably)
