Piaras Last-Name Slight correction: one point for every round winner, not for every max.

Piaras Last-Name John has aptomailed Stephen to organise their games without response, so I've decided to let him through. As for Edward v James, I've just consulted with them both and we should hopefully reach a consensus today.

Tourney round: Apto-Chess Championship: Chess World Cup: First Round

<< Sign-Up Page | Chess World Cup: Second Round >>

Notes from the organizer: OK, so the first tournament is the Chess World Cup. As there have at the time of writing been 21 signer-uppers, the first round becomes a qualifying round for 10 players. If there's 22, it'll be 12; 23, 14 and so on.

The Chess World Cup is a straight knockout tourney (with a 3rd-place match). Ties are two-legged "Champions League" games (LNLLNLLNLNC, all picked by Player 1). This'll allow both players to play one game picking the rounds (White) and one game not (Black). In-game scoring is one point for every max, but each win will be recorded as 1 point, and each draw as half a point, so no need to worry about aggregate scores — the result's what counts.

If both players stand at 1–1 after the two games, a tie-breaker of two Speed Champions League games (10-second rounds) will be played, and two Lightning games of 5-second rounds if necessary. If all else fails, it'll go to a 15-rounder. (Just in case anyone needs a hand setting up custom games, which you'll need to do as I don't think it's an option for tourney organisers, I'll explain it in a comment.)

There is one procedural difference from the real World Cup that I've decided to add myself: the presence of random draws. The real World Cup features a fixed bracket, much like the ones at series finals, where you always know who you're going to play if you win. However, to shake things up slightly while still keeping it fair, I've split everyone into five pots, depending on seeds and if they have a bye to the second round or not. This is explained on the spreadsheet at the bottom. I'll draw the first two rounds at 8 p.m. on the 15th, and subsequent rounds sometime later on.

I think two weeks is ample time to play each round, but I've left a couple of days extra in case of it being a while before the round is approved. The bracket, which I'll shuffle in accordance with each draw, can be viewed here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1O3LzUw00c4CCePX0I5TiBFHnwUvhQOov9vVIFaJsJRM/edit#gid=1205044849

Another quote, this time from third-ever world champion José Capablanca: “You may learn much more from a game you lose than from a game you win. You will have to lose hundreds of games before becoming a good player.”

Good luck! :)
