![]() | Charlie Reams Likewise. Any idea why Google Translate fails so hard with the game pages? It seems to have no idea for most words and just transliterates them. |
![]() | Adam Gillard I think it's just generally rubbish at translating (not just with Hebrew)! What I meant was that I don't understand what the Hebrew Letters Attack bot tournament is in aid of, unless it's a precursor to an undoubtedly popular human vs human version. |
![]() | Charlie Reams Generally the problem with machine translation is getting the meaning right, it's not at the level of individual words being completely unknown. That's what a find surprising. Compare the translations of http://www.apterous.org/dic.php?dic=10 to the equivalent, even for other "difficult" languages like Finnish and Russian, and Hebrew is noticeably worse. |
![]() | Adam Gillard It probably doesn't help that the same letters can represent many different meanings and even different consonant sounds depending on the vowels and other diacritics, which aren't included in the standard orthography. All of the longer words are phonetic renderings of English anyway, so Google isn't too far off by translating דיספרופורציונליימ as "Disfrofortzionliim" (actually pronounced 'disproportsionalayim') for what seems to me to mean 'two disproportionals'. The letter פ in this word can represent either an 'f' sound, or, as in this case, a 'p' sound. With the extra diacritics, the 'p' sound is written with a Dagesh (dot) - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_alphabet#Dagesh - so it's hardly surprising that Google struggles to translate these words with no context and no diacritics. |
![]() | Charlie Reams That makes sense, thanks for explaining. Abjads eh? |
