Fi Thorne

Fi Thorne It took a few rounds to get my brain around this one! :-)

Tal Lessner

Tal Lessner Is the spreadsheet scoring method correct? Shouldn't it be 1 point for each successful round, and not "total points scored on successful rounds"?

Probably wouldn't change the score much, but I think it will move Mike Lee to 3rd place.

Chris Hare

Chris Hare Well spotted, thanks for pointing that out. It's a consequence of moving back to a manual-entry spreadsheet after last year's semi-automated effort -- a column marked "SCORE" isn't doing what I thought it was. Maintenance will now ensue.

Jon Pinyan

Jon Pinyan What an interesting and brain-scrambling challenge.

Tourney round: The Twelve Games of Chris-mas: Vol. IV: The Holly and The: Game Two

<< Game One | Game Three >>

Notes from the organizer: Game Two! Splutter, cough, cough.

In this game, you'll score a point for every round that you successfully declare and make a number that is X away from the target, where X is the first number you use in your solution. Note that your solution must be a scoring one, and I'll use your solution as reported by Apterous. Here's an example:

The selection is [1,2,3,4,5,100] and the target is 201.
-- Janet declares 200. She does 1*100=100, 2*100=200. She scores a point, because 200 is one away from 201, and she used 1 as the first number in her calculations.
-- Wilberforce declares 203. He does 2*100=200, 200+3=203. He scores a point, because 203 is two away from 201, and he used 2 as the first number in his calculations.
-- Archibald declares 207. He will score no points at all, because 207 is 6 away from 201, and there's no 6 in the selection for him to use.
-- Veronica declares 101. This is technically possible (because she can do 100+1=101), but Apterous won't record it because it's more than 10 away from the target, so she scores no points.

(Obviously, this is Unlimited Jnr, so you're not going to be seeing any 100s, but I'm copying and pasting this from last year's very similar round and changing it and having it still make sense is more than I can rely on myself to achieve.)

If you use the Notes box to enter your solution, please be aware that Apterous might parse it in an order you don't intend. For example, if you type 1+(2*3), Apterous will report your solution as 2*3=6, 1+6=7, so the first number will be 2. Dead ends are fine (so if you declare 4 away, e.g. 205, and your solution is 4+5=9, 2x(100+3)-1 =205, that's perfectly acceptable). (My thanks to Sean D for asking this question last year.)

The player who scores the most points in this way will win. Ties will be broken in favour of the player with the higher game score, then in favour of the player who has used the greater number of different Xs. Any remaining ties will be broken at my sole discretion.

The BONUS TOURNAMENT POINT will be awarded to any player who scores at least 90 actual Apterous points during their game. (So if this all sounds far too much like hard work, score 90 points by playing normally and you'll get the BTP.)

If you have any questions about the rules, scoring, or anything else pertaining to this tourney, please feel free to ask.
