Ian Volante

Ian Volante Not only did I fail to find a valid word, I forgot that H exists.

Elwin Carlos

Elwin Carlos I just didn't read the rules properly!

Fi Thorne

Fi Thorne I stopped my game after I got an invalid word. Was that the right thing to do or should I have carried on with the next letter?

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall You did the right thing Fi. Once you break the chain the scoring ends. You made it further than me :)

Maria Chandler

Maria Chandler I did the same Fi. Couldn’t find any words starting with K in the selection.

Trevor MacEoin

Trevor MacEoin i really should have read this before playing

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall You're not the first, and you won't be the last Trevor.

Sarah Binns

Sarah Binns I should have read this too haha

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall You both only scored 10 / 9 less than me, and not only did I read the rules... I wrote them.

Owen Carroll

Owen Carroll Is it ok to refresh or leave the site if the round doesn’t contain the letter you need?

Andy SC

Andy SC @Owen - It's Touchdown. So you shouldn't need to do that.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Hi Owen - you shouldn't be manipulating rounds by refreshing and leaving in tournaments unless it's specifically mentioned in a tournament rules - although i've never come across a tournament that allows this. it's generally considered cheating.

Steven Oldham

Steven Oldham I read it and still flumped with an awful selection in R3. Made better/worse with an eight in the next round :)

Andy SC

Andy SC I think where you decide to start in the alphabet is kind of key to this round. Starting at 'A' was definitely not the best choice but it felt more in the spirit to start at the beginning.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall I started on Q and failed on T which was a bit unexpected. I spotted TOGA after my time was up, but no 4 letter word within the time.

Owen Carroll

Owen Carroll I’m sorry Dave. I have done that but I didn’t know if it was cheating or not. I realised it might be so that’s why I asked. I forgot how touchdown works for the moment. If you allow me to keep playing, it will not happen again, but I understand if you want to ban me from the tournament

Martin Hurst

Martin Hurst Lol

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall Owen - it's fine. Genuine mistake (I'll only disqualify you at the end if you beat me ;))

Owen Carroll

Owen Carroll Ok thank you.

Owen Carroll

Owen Carroll Well I don’t think that’s happening lol

Adam Latchford

Adam Latchford For those left - I think L is the best starting letter. K is randomly fiendish and gives you chances at both bonuses

Matthew Brockwell

Matthew Brockwell I actually do think A is the best starting letter as A-T gives 4 vowel rounds where the letter is more likely to be in the selection. Also the earlier letters are quite common and I have a hunch offer better scoring opportunities in touchdown. I think the X bonus is only gonna be worth at most +2 due to nerfing the max word length so probably a skip most times anyway. Let's see!

David Holmes

David Holmes Harder to get a long word starting with I or O though?

Dan Southwell

Dan Southwell Blobbed at J but carried on for practice and fun! Enjoyable format that Dave 👍😁

Ravi Choudhary

Ravi Choudhary In Round 1, I gave a dud word [FIREPOT], yet was still able to garner points afterwards.

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall In the tournament / on the spreadsheet your scoring finished with FIREPOT, R. (55 points)

Ravi Choudhary

Ravi Choudhary Thank you.

Ravi Choudhary

Ravi Choudhary So for Round 2, if I ended Round 1 looking for a word beginning with O, does that mean I must begin Round 2 with a word beginning with P?

Dave Kempshall

Dave Kempshall No. Round 2 resets with different rules. You can lead with whatever word you want, but your next round word must begin with the same letter that your previous word ended with.

Ravi Choudhary

Ravi Choudhary OK, thank you.

Dan Spinks

Dan Spinks someone put me out of my misery, was my R9 impossible? I've been staring at it for ages and still can't find a 4. VEBIAPGEF starting with I

Fiona T

Fiona T image for a more everyday word!

Dan Spinks

Dan Spinks oh bugger, really should've seen that. cheers

Sarah Binns

Sarah Binns Oh no!!!! I forgot it was touchdown. Epic fail.

Andres S.

Andres S. Just wanna see what people think, is it possible to make a word starting with I out of the selection EAMAOXACP?

Ian Volante

Ian Volante Ouch! If there are any, they're very obscure.

Adam Latchford

Adam Latchford Can confirm impossible

Tom B

Tom B every letter can be played as a single-letter word, if ever you get stuck. So, for 1 point, I

Tom B

Tom B IMP is also there

Show all comments
Dan Spinks

Dan Spinks Fairly sure I and IMP both have fewer than 4 letters though

Tom B

Tom B Ah, sorry, was thinking this thread was round 1

Adam Dexter

Adam Dexter This is round 1, but the rules are still that a word has to be 4 or more letters to count.

Tom B

Tom B In my game, I played X and it didn't end my run. Not sure why not, really

Fiona T

Fiona T the pre-defined formats don't allow for specific tournament rules - so Dave manually scores to the rules, but apto is blissfully unaware!

<< Sign-ups | Round 2: Start At The End >>

Notes from the organizer: The traditional starting point…

In the opening round the challenge is to continue to declare words round-by-round that begin with letters that sequence through the alphabet. You can start at any point in the alphabet but must then follow the letter sequence.

For example, if you start with RELATION, then round two will need a word beginning with S, round 3 T, round 4 U and so on. If a player reaches Z, then they need to return to A to keep their sequence going.

If you fail to keep the sequence going, your game scoring ends. In one small modification for this year, only words of 4 letters or more will keep you progressing. If you declare a word of 3 or worse (or a dud word) your game ends.

Because there is an element of luck involved with the letters Q and X, players are allowed to skip these letter and go straight onto R and Y respectively. However, if you do use the Q and X you’ll receive 5 bonus points to your final score for each.

Example game:
IGLOO
JACK
KINETIC
LOVER
MUMMY
NIGHT
OPENING
POPPY
QUAD (5 bonus points + 4 for quad)
RANGERS
SANITY
TOENAIL
UPWARDS
VANITY
WORRIED
YACHT (Skips X)
ZIP (Declared a word lower than 4 letters long, game end without Zip counting towards score)
* All remaining rounds don’t count towards score

Game score: 97 (92 + 5 bonus points for use of Q)

Good luck!
