Andy SC

Andy SC This sounds like a crazy idea and bound to b chaotically fun

Sean D

Sean D Somw brilliant and fiendish ideas in here!

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck For full authenticity, each day should also include all the game styles from the previous day as well.

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck Mind you it would ruin the title I guess

Sean D

Sean D Aeguably the best/fairest way to do it would just to give everyone 12 days to play the 12 games, with all games going live on the same date

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns I was thinking last week about doing a 12 days of christmas tourney and forcing people to play 78 games on the last day, this definitely seems a more enjoyable version :D

Andy SC

Andy SC I would have totally played 78 games on the last day :)

Chris Hare

Chris Hare My current intention is to (as Sean suggests) give everyone all the games in one lump to play as you wish. I appreciate that not everyone will be entirely delighted to have 12 unplayed games turn up at once, so I'm amenable to staggering the starts of the rounds a bit if people prefer.

The motion is that all the rounds should start at once (on the 17th, probably). Those in favour, like this comment.

Chris Hare

Chris Hare Those against, like this comment.

Mike Lee

Mike Lee Forgive me if I'm being silly but what does "only words beginning with the same letter score" mean for Touchdown LA?

Chris Hare

Chris Hare I'll go into more detail when the individual round pages go up (hopefully tomorrow), but basically "make all your words start with the same letter".

Anthony Endsor

Anthony Endsor Much as I am in favour of all 12 games being given for us to play as and when we wish, it may create a small problem, in that the bot limit for unplayed games is 10 at once. I'm not sure if tourneys are exempt from that, but just thought I'd say so we don't have a sh*tstorm to clear up later.

Chris Hare

Chris Hare This is an excellent point, and one I'll investigate tomorrow.

Elizabeth Beer

Elizabeth Beer I’ll be honest… I have around about the max for unfinished bot games… but have had no problem with bit tourney games, including loads in the recent Apto gymnastics tournament

Elizabeth Beer

Elizabeth Beer (I mean, there were 16 games just in the numbers finals if you are go9d enough, and unfinished personal games made no difference)

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier Yes, I think the limit is only to do with started but unfinished games, I don't think unstarted tournament games affect it at all.

Chris Hare

Chris Hare I've given myself 13 unplayed tourney games against Prune, and everything seems to be fine, apart from the fact that I now have 13 unplayed tourney games against Prune.

Anthony Endsor

Anthony Endsor I'm glad it seems to be working ok. Chris, I'm sure you can find a fun way to tank the 13 tourney games, knowing their creation was for a good cause :)

Callum Todd

Callum Todd I just learned of the existence of this four minutes ago and can't be arsed to read all about it so I've speculatively signed up. If I'm too late feel free to slam the door in my face. Merry Christmas!

Chris Hare

Chris Hare You're in. I'm intrigued to see how far the 'not reading all about it' strategy will take you...

Sean D

Sean D Not sure where best to post this but I'm blown away by the originiality, imagination and sheer fiendishness of this entire endeavour. Amazing stuff Chris, looking foreward to making an absolute balls of it!

Chris Hare

Chris Hare Thanks, Sean :)

Chris Hare

Chris Hare I'm (slowly) starting to put results into the spreadsheet. Played games in Game One and Game Ten have been added so far; please let me know if you spot something I've done wrong.

Chris Hare

Chris Hare Games Three and Nine now added.

Chris Hare

Chris Hare Anyone with games remaining, please consider this a gentle reminder that you have a little over 24 hours in which to complete them.

Chris Hare

Chris Hare All the results, with the exception of Game Six, are now on the spreadsheet. Tomorrow, I'll judge the poetry competition and work out the overall scores.

If you look at the spreadsheet and think I've made a mistake, you're probably right: send me an apto-mail and I'll fix it.

Chris Hare

Chris Hare In an amusing twist that perhaps I should have seen coming, there's currently a three-way tie for victory. I'm consulting with those people on the best way to proceed.

For the rest of you, all your results should now be viewable. Thank you all very much for playing! For those who might be interested, later this week, I'll post a discussion ticket going into more detail on the results, including my wholly subjective judging of the poetry competition (which was extremely close).

Tourney round: The Twelve Games of Chris-mas: Sign-Up Page

Game One >>

Notes from the organizer: It's that time of year again.

All your friends and/or family are gathered together in joyous celebration of something-or-other. You forget what; you started on the sherry several hours ago and now the room is gently rotating. Granny insisted on watching The King's Speech, but you're having to explain to her why Colin Firth wasn't in it this year, and her hearing aids fell in the trifle and haven't been the same since. Aunt Sharon has brought her new boyfriend, who happens to be the old boyfriend Uncle Kevin brought last year. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife, but maybe that's down to everyone eating their own body-weight in brassicas.

So why not retreat to a safe distance, boot up your laptop/desktop/portable telephone, and do some silly things on Apterous to pass the time?

In this tourney, I'll give you 12 games (in 10 rounds) against bots to play over the festive season (the last two weeks of December, ending on the 31st). Each game will be judged according to criteria that I'll provide fully on the page for that round, tournament points awarded (7 for first, 5 for second, 4 for third, 3 for fourth, 2 for fifth and 1 for everyone else), and the winner will be the person who accrues the most of those across all the rounds.

The games will be as follows:

1) Touchdown LA: only words beginning with the same letter score
2) Junior NA: most solves of rounds with prime targets
3) Standard 15: beat Apterous Nude by scoring in the fewest rounds
4) Nice CA: solve conundrums in alphabetical order according to time elapsed
5) Omelette, Hyper Unlimited, Hypertouch LA: score by declaring the same word (or words) in each game
6) Touchdown Jnr LA: best 20-word poem wins
7) French 15: most English game wins
8) Duckdown NA: avoid two numbers (not just one) in each solution
9) Beanstalk LA: do equally well in both halves of the beanstalk
10) Aegilops CA: your score for each conundrum is the number of missing letters

Further details (including tie-break criteria) will be given on the individual round pages. There'll probably be a spreadsheet too, you lucky people.

There won't be any penalty for unplayed games, but please try to play each individual game in one sitting to avoid spurious accusations of skulduggery.

If this sort of tomfoolery sounds appealing, feel free to sign up below. Sign-ups will be left open throughout the tourney, so you can jump in at any time. The winner will be announced as soon as I've done the admin.

Ho-ho-ho.
