Martin Long

Martin Long Good luck everyone. Just treat this as a maxes only Spoilage Numbers Attack. Ignore Rex's score, what he does is basically irrelevant.

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns Rapid out of the blocks, huge opener that, vvwp Edward

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns Amusingly I played Edward last Monday and he mentioned being a bit frustrated after his octolock game, expecting elimination - what a difference a week makes eh :D

I'm another that finally broke the no practice rule here but I don't think that's the issue - couldn't match Edward's monster score in any of those either! Massive congrats :)

I wasn't expecting to get this far, would've been delighted just cracking the top 10! Been brilliant fun as ever, thanks for hosting another awesome tourney Matthew!!

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier And it's all over! Finishing 3rd with a brilliant return to the tournament after 4 years away, it's Mervyn. And, with his first top 10 finish and the highest cumulative points total this year, the runner-up is Dave. Well played both, and a big thank you to everyone else who took part in the fun this year.

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier But, with a very impressive 80 points in the final after that brilliant max game the round before, it's time to crown the new Weakest Link Numbers champion. Congratulations, Edward, you are this year's Strongest Link. GOODBYE! *disturbing wink*

Mervyn Tong

Mervyn Tong Couldn't believe how hard this format was; phenomenal performance by Edward, I could only try and make the score respectable in the end! Thanks as always Matthew for organising, it's been a great tourney :D

Edward Ashcroft

Edward Ashcroft Thank you for organising Matthew, a great tournament!

Well played Dave and Mervyn. I think I was pretty fortunate to have such a good start in this round - couldn't believe my luck!

I am also glad that there was just one weakest link in round one of the tourney. If there were 4 weakest links then I don't think I'd have made it to round 2!

Martin Long

Martin Long Congratulations Edward. A deserved winner with some great rounds on the way - I was especially impressed with your Hypertouch game.

Well done to Matthew on organising a great tournament. I'll be back next year.

Elliott Mellor

Elliott Mellor Well played Edward - 80 against Rex in spoilage is no mean feat! A very worthy winner, and well done to all the finalists.

Tim Down

Tim Down Congratulations, Edward! This is a tough and competitive tournament, great effort. Thanks again to Matthew for flawless organisation and a great format.

Tourney round: Weakest Link Numbers Tournament 2021: Round 24 - Spoilage

<< Round 23 - Hypertouch

Notes from the organizer: It's time for the 24th and FINAL round. This year, for the first time, the final 3 players must take on the ultimate apterous numbers challenge. It's a Spoilage Numbers Attack against Apterous Rex. So, it's only maxes that will score, which probably means you're hunting for the exact target each round. At least Rex chooses 4 large, so there should be some reasonably solvable rounds in there.

Let's check out the contenders:
Dave Robjohns - Cumulative Points 4061, 3 * Strongest Link (R5, R11, R22), 7 max games, narrowest escape 10 points (R18, R19, R21, R23), Spoilage PB 169, Spoilage most maxes 9, 2020 11th place.
Edward Ashcroft - Cumulative Points 3933, 1 * Strongest Link (R23), 3 max games, narrowest escape 5 points (R22), Spoilage PB 159, Spoilage most maxes 11, 2020 3rd place.
Mervyn Tong - Cumulative Points 3926, 0 * Strongest Link, 3 max games, narrowest escape 0 points (R19), Spoilage PB 52, Spoilage most maxes 4, 2016 5th place.

So, Dave comes into the final having racked up the most points and has the second highest Spoilage NA score of all time. However Edward has reached the final before and his personal best of 11 maxes in this format is pretty incredible. Mervyn therefore comes into the final as the outsider, having only ever played 2 Spoilage NAs, but as we've seen in previous editions the underdog can never be ruled out.

The highest scoring player in this round will be declared the 2021 champion. If there is a tie then margin of defeat will be taken into account amongst tied players followed, if necessary, by total cumulative score in the tournament (see notes by matches).
