Dave Robjohns Some instances of TJ cons being a bit laggy and freezing. Ticketed: https://www.apterous.org/ticket_view.php?ticket=5586

Chris Hare

Chris Hare Do we need to beat Rex within the 20 rounds, or do tie-breaks count?

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns Tie breaks permissible :)

Dave Robjohns

Dave Robjohns Another thing I didn't mention - for the alphabetical order challenge, I'm ruling that timings have to be distinct, e.g. if PAWPAWS and PIUPIUS both display as 20.0 seconds, that will not count. Timings must be strictly less than (faster than) the next word alphabetically

James Hall

James Hall Sam C-L is still on max points after these three rounds - seriously impressive given the difficulty of some of the bonuses!

Tourney round: Bot Ladders: Round 3: Touch Jnr Conundrums

<< Round 2: Nice Numbers | Round 4: Instant Letters >>

Notes from the organizer: The next rung on the overall ladder is our first conundrum level, and the final level where I anticipate beating Prime will be commonplace :( When considering a variant with easy conundrums, there could only be one. Love it or hate it, it has to be Touch Junior. While the various dictionary expansions have seen the set of general conundrums grow, Touch Jnr cons have declined over the years. The latest dictionary update has added one (Jacuzzi) but to my knowledge there are still only 48 cons.

As ever, your standard points on the intermediary ladder are:
0 - Didn't play
1 - Beat Prune
2 - Beat Nude
3 - Beat Waldorf
4 - Beat Plum
5 - Beat Caesar
6 - Beat Velvet
7 - Beat Prime
And the bonuses:
1 - Easy: Beat Apterous Rex in a CA
1 - Medium: Max a game vs Prune in alphabetical order*
1 - Hard: Max a game against Prime

*You need to buzz in with the timings of the answers in alphabetical order. For example, if the answer to R1 is AKVAVIT and the answer to R2 is ZYZZYVA, you need to answer R1 faster.

I obviously have no way of stopping people from using a phone/watch to help time yourself, and using paper to right down the order, so therefore it's easier to openly allow this. Word lists to help you answer these are not allowed though, as normal.

With there being only 48 cons, repeated cons are common, occasionally even consecutively or 3 in the same game. These will be discounted from your game when attempting the alphabet thing; only the first instance of a word matters.

So, for 10 points
1) Max game vs Prime
2) Beat Rex
3) Max game vs Prune solving con speeds in alphabetical order.

Again, these bonuses are meant to be tough at this stage - since beating Prime is relatively straightforward - if you're new to these conundrums, after around 10 games with Prune you'll likely have seen them all and be very capable of maxing games.

So, why is this format easy?
Only 48 cons. Having said that, Prune has maxed it https://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=1531384
Why is beating Rex easy?
It's *easier* :P Generally you'll soon be able to do these quickly
Why is alphabet max medium?
After a bit of practice, you'll be solving these fast. Helpful tip - 16th alphabetically is approx. J and 32nd alphabetically is approx. P.
Why is maxing vs Prime Hard?
Prime has the occasional 0.7s solve, so winning every round without pressing the wrong key is very tough.
