In the event of a tie, the following procedure should be used:
1. Points (Not including bonuses);
2. Gain and loss rate (points gained/points lost);
3. Points gained;
4. Head-to-head results (within groups).

Notes from the organizer: This round will be played in a round-robin fashion. Up to 30 players (no less than 18, including invitees) will be divided into six groups, each up to five players.
The games in the first round will be in the format of the classic 9 rounder.

Scoring
Difference <= 10 points: winner gets 2 points, loser gets 1 point
Difference > 10 points: winner scores 3 points, loser scores nothing
Bonus: each 9-letter word will add 0.2 points in the total score, but no more than 0.6 points per game (NOT including conundrums).

Elimination
The top 2 from each group and the two best #3 finishers will automatically move on to Round 2.
The rest of #3 finishers will play a single play-off game to determine the last two Top 16 members.
Other players will be eliminated.
