Thomas Carey So, a bit like the Highlander thing of last August?
Johnny Canuck Yes, although in this version you actually play against other people (rather than Prune) in every round. Draws will be random, but weighted to avoid multiple matches between the same two people. FYI, we're planning to start on 1 May.
Phyl Styles Just wondering, will time play a part in this? In the qualifier you can score 10 or 0 if it's a conundrum, so there could be lots of lowest scores? If itr's not a conundrum, you'll still get lots of people on equal scores. It would then be hard to use that performance as a discriminator for later rounds? or have I missed something?
Ian Volante I'd like to play, but what if I'm busy next week?
Johnny Canuck @Phyl: The qualifier is a 15 rounder. @Ian: I can give you an extension. When will you be able to play?
Andy Platt Stepdown scoring for fairness?
Matthew Tassier Surely fairness is less interesting. Stepdown scoring gives strong players a greater advantage.
Johnny Canuck Yeah, random chance is high in this tournament. If it goes over well, I may start running them regularly (maybe monthly).
Ian Volante I should be definitely back by Saturday, assuming I can't play midweek (not sure).
Johnny Canuck @Ian: Ok then, the deadline for playing the qualifier will be 11:59 PM on Sunday, 5 May.
Phyl Styles Sorry, I didn't read it properly - makes sense now
Johnny Canuck The deadline to register for this tournament is 11:59 PM on Tuesday, 30 April. If there are an odd number of people signed up, one lucky player will get to take on Apterous Prune in the qualifier.
Johnny Canuck The Qualifier is now known as the Antechamber.

Johnny Canuck And so it begins! Good luck to all!
Andy Platt there's some good close games there.
Marcus Hares Have these matches slightly changed since I last looked at them? I'm fairly sure I was paired against someone different before?
Johnny Canuck Oh yeah, sorry. We had a late entrant. My mistake.
Johnny Canuck Sorry, but we'll need to move this tourney along in the near future. Therefore, the Antechamber will be closing at 11:59 PM on Sunday, May 12. (We may make a small exception if someone is out of town and won't be back until Monday morning or similar.) Not playing your Antechamber match does not disqualify you, but if you can't solve the conundrum in the next round you are more likely to be eliminated. If you haven't played yet, please use your aptomail threads to choose a match time. |
Notes from the organizer: Just another innovation I figured I'd throw out there. After an initial qualifier, all entrants will play a 1-round game (most likely a Single Conundrum). Whichever player gets the lowest score in this 1-round game is eliminated; everyone else moves on and plays a 2-round game, then a 3-round game, and so on. If there is a tie for lowest score, whoever got the lowest score in the qualifier is eliminated. Oh and there may be prizes (in the form of cute .gifs).
