![]() | Marcus Hares Stephen Read and I would like to pair up please - combined rating of 3268 (at time of entering) - thanks James |
![]() | Ian Volante Anyone wish to join a pair with me? |
![]() | Ian Volante No comments on tautology though please. |
![]() | Zarte Siempre Lauren Hamer and I wish to enter as a pair - 1550 + 1718 = 3268 at time of entering. |
![]() | Mark D Clarification of the rules is needed - specifically, the rule about being able to private chat answers to your partner. If this rule stands, I'm not playing - a team of two 1600 rated players is never going to beat a team of a 2100 and a 1300 when that 2100 player can just give his knowledge to the other one. It undermines the entire thing. |
![]() | Zarte Siempre I feel it would've made more sense to make it a best of 5, with each team member playing each other team member, with a tie-break last. but up to you :) |
![]() | Marcus Hares It doesn't always follow that the higher rated player can impart their knowledge on the lower rated player - see http://challonge.com/apterousteam. Admittedly the chat feature was only used for the tie-break match when we last did this - would that apply this time or do we assume that the chat feature can be used throughout the entire fixture? If so, then I assume both players of a pair would need to be present for ALL the games? |
![]() | Marcus Hares http://challonge.com/apterousteam should hopefully work |
![]() | Mark D I just think it horribly misses the point if you can tell someone else what to declare. In a mismatched pairing, the chance of the lower rated player ever being able to tell the higher rated player something they hadn't spotted is next to zilch, therefore, the higher rated player is doing the majority of the work. Where does this leave the team element? |
![]() | Marcus Hares This was the idea behind the Davis Cup idea - player A from team 1 plays player A from team 2 while player B from team 1 plays player B from team 2, then alternate. Then if a deciding rubber is needed (which much of the time it will be) then the players team up to play the tie-break match. Same as in tennis or golf or whatever, the "better" player in the team is going to be helping their partner and I don't see this as being much different. Granted your chances are increased if you're paired up with Innis or Jack or whoever but I'm not sure how better to do this? |
![]() | Mark D Maybe the tiebreak match could incorporate the "I'm feeling lucky" feature. |
![]() | Mark D But again, the best players will then win. 2200 + 1100 vs 1700 + 1600 = essentially a tiebreak game of 2200 vs 1700. The 2200 will win that 9 times out of 10. |
![]() | Marcus Hares The best players usually do win the tournaments - I agree this slightly negates the point of it being a pair tournament but I don't see a better alternative (yet). |
![]() | Peter Fenton In the event of a tie break, would it not be possible for the higher rated player to only help on alternate rounds? That would mean you could avoid the obvious advantage to the pairs with the highest rated player that Mark was referring to. |
![]() | Jon Stitcher Can you sign up myself and Jon O'neill. Joint rating around 3,250. |
![]() | Jon O'Neill Have to completely agree with Mark. The team of Bob de Caux and a banana would be massive favourites for the title. That said, I'm in. |
![]() | Jon Stitcher You're playing with a banana. |
![]() | Jon O'Neill But enough about my sex life. |
![]() | Andy Platt Well whatever you work out it should be fun, I think I'm in with Remi |
![]() | Remi Benoit In with Fatty ! |
![]() | Andy Platt :( |
![]() | Zarte Siempre Lawl |
![]() | David Barnard anyone want to pair up with me? I've already signed up |
![]() | Andy Platt nope |
![]() | Zarte Siempre You tell him Fatty! |
![]() | Andy Platt don't you start or I'll sit on you |
![]() | Tom Cappleman I'll pair with you David if you want. Combined rating 3150 |
![]() | Ian Volante Can do, David. |
![]() | Ian Volante Oh, drat. |
![]() | Ian Volante Actually, I suspect that we wouldn't be over 3050, so unless you and Thomas wish to lose 100 points between you, how about it? |
![]() | Tom Cappleman The limit's up to 3300 (see first comment above) |
![]() | Tom Cappleman My turn to post just too late |
![]() | Ian Volante Ah okay. |
![]() | Andy Platt Thomas & David, I make your combined ratings are 3698 so yeah good luck with that.. it's not pro rank ratings, otherwise it would be a very elitist tournament as only the top 24 ranked players in pro ranks have a PR rating of over (3300/2). Ian + David in terms of normal ratings at time of writing however is 3273, which would be a very competitive team. |
![]() | Andy Platt me & remi currently on 3299, casual |
![]() | Tom Cappleman Never mind then. Go for it Ian |
![]() | David Barnard Yeah you're on then Ian |
![]() | Ian Volante Cool. We're applying right now (just in case ratings go up!) |
![]() | Zarte Siempre This is you, Ian - I don't think there's much chance of that ;P |
![]() | Ian Volante HAR DEE HAR |
![]() | Hywel Morgan No room for another pair? |
![]() | Hywel Morgan Only just seen this |
![]() | David Barnard lol 14 rounders= 2 conundrums, lovely haha |
![]() | Phyl Styles Isn't that 5 pairs? |
![]() | Phyl Styles ah, thanks |
![]() | Marcus Hares Where did the other 2 matches disappear to? I only see 4 matches here |
![]() | Ian Volante Why not? |
![]() | Marcus Hares Presumably two of the pairs (Zarte/Lauren & Heather/Liam) went straight to the next round and the two winning pairs from this round will join them? |
![]() | Hywel Morgan I'm in James, and I'll play with Paul Sinha if that's ok. If it's too much of a hassle, don't worry. H |
![]() | Hywel Morgan Cool, thanks, James. |
![]() | Jon Stitcher So, when I play Remi, should Jono be online for support or not? I'm confused. |
![]() | Andy Platt only if it goes to tie break, which it won't, as we're going to crush you anyway |
![]() | Jon Stitcher ah good luck with that. |
![]() | Heather Styles < sorry, Liam |
![]() | Andy Platt when you fancy Jono? |
![]() | Jon Stitcher Whenever you want, he's gonna take you down bitch! |
![]() | Jon O'Neill I'm around all evening. |
![]() | Jon Stitcher Yeah! take that sucker down! |
| Show all comments | |
![]() | Jon Stitcher So what happens now? Are me and Jono through 3-2 or do we need a tiebreak? |
![]() | Andy Platt What is the capital of Central African Republic |
![]() | Jon Stitcher Can I pick Jono vs Remi please? |
![]() | Remi Benoit Sorry, was out for a few days. Are you waiting for us to choose the player ? Hum ... let me think about it ... I'll say Andy !! :) Of course I want to be present and try to help him, who knows ! |
![]() | Jon Stitcher Jono and Jon won. skillz. |
Notes from the organizer: The Late Spring Pairs gives players a chance to team up with one another and fight for victory in a 14-Rounder format.
You may team up with who you wish, as long as:
-The combined rating of both players at the time of applying is less than 3050. This prevents people like Innis and Dan McColm teaming up with one another.
To play, each player will have one match officially under their name (hence the best of 3) whilst the other will spectate and talk to their partner through the private chat window.
Preliminaries and Round One matches will be posted here on the 19th of May. So in the meantime, you have 2 weeks to find a partner and sign up!
Ran from: 19 – 31 May 2013. Format: 14 Rounder. Matches: Best-of-3. Approved.
Signed up: Jon O'Neill, Jon Stitcher, Ian Volante, Liam Tiernan, Marcus Hares, Stephen R, Hywel Morgan, Andy Platt, David Barnard, Heather Styles, Remi Benoit.
Fixtures: 6. Completed: 5.
Key. Green: winner. Red: loser. Grey: tie. (Stripes: provisional, match in progress.)
