Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck My name is listed in the "Tournaments you can enter" page. Am I invited and simply not on the list due to my accident of birth?

Matthew Tassier

Matthew Tassier Anyone can enter, Johnny. The list of people is those who are guaranteed a last 32 spot. See notes.

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck Ah yes, so they can, sorry. In that case... In like Duran Durin.

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson One of these days, I'll actually find a straightforward way of putting it :-) all can enter, as always!

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson Just over 24 hours until the qualifying draw, at which point sign-ups will be closed, and we have 56 entries- the record for this event was 63, which was set back in 2011, so there's still time!

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson 3 hours left to sign up!

Jim B

Jim B Less than an hour to go and 62 in...two more would be pretty sweet?

Jim B

Jim B Make the draw easier for Ben, surely, with 64 entries...

JNM Rawson

JNM Rawson One more now :-)

Jim B

Jim B 64 is such a versatile number, and all that.

Jim B

Jim B 1 more...

JNM Rawson

JNM Rawson We have 64!

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson A new record number of entrants! :-)

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck So 40 people will need to play in for 8 spots, amirite? How is that going to work?

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson A quick note on the draw- everyone in the top 16 games are playing in qualifying round 1, and will have to play another qualifying game to reach round 1 proper (I'll add the games once both players have progressed).

Ian Volante

Ian Volante Is there another draw for round 2, or is it 1v2 etc?

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson It'll be 1 vs 2, but a game has been withdrawn from the draw so it won't be exactly as it is below, if that makes any sense

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson Just seven days left in qualifying... If you haven't played your round 1 match yet (that's everyone from Eoin/Brett upwards) please do so ASAP so I can get your round 2 match put into the system. The draw for round 1 proper will take place in Sunday 20th march at 7:15pm sharp. :-)

Eoin Jackson

Eoin Jackson Surely everyone from Anoush/Dave upwards... Me 'n Brett seem to be somewhere in the middle of that table...

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson There are two rounds of qualifying (as there are 47 people playing for 15 spots)- The matches from James/Jenny downwards are round 2 games, ones that will qualify directly for round 1 proper (hence why Ian/Gevin and Tracey/Chris are on the list twice).

Ben Wilson

Ben Wilson 4 days to go until the draw for round 1- if you haven't played your qualifying games and need an extension to the deadline please let me know ASAP.

Tourney round: Apterous Masters IX: Qualifying round

Round 1 proper >>

Notes from the organizer: It's back- and so am I!

After handing reins of the masters over to Zarte for last year, I am once again in charge of the longest-running anual tournament in apterous history. The format is the same as it always was- 24 people will be picked to play in the first round proper of the event, whilst everyone else will have the opportunity to qualify through the, um, qualifying round for the remaining spots. The tournament will be a straight knock-out event like the FA cup. The qualifying round and round 1 proper will be best of 3 games, round 2 will be best of 5, and the number of games will increase until the bast of 11 grand final.

The number of qualifying rounds that need to be played will depend on the number of people entering the tournament and the number of masters accepting/declining their invitations, but in previous years, there's rarely been any need for more than one round.

The following 24 masters will receive entry into round 1 of the draw:

Innis Carson, Mark Deeks, Jack Worsley, David Barnard, Conor Travers, James Robinson, Callum Todd, Rob Foster, Graeme Cole, Tom Cappleman, Matthew Brockwell, Dylan Taylor, Tom Carey, Zarte Siempre, Jen Steadman, Jonathan Wynn, Matthew Tassier, Mark Murray, Andy Platt, Adam Gillard, Jon O'Neill, Marcus Hares, James Rowan, Mark Tournoff

PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE ON THE ABOVE LIST- you must sign up for the tournament on this page to be included in the round 1 draw, even though you (obviously) won't play in the qualifying round.

Masters were decided based on on-screen performance (from the finals stages of the two most recent series and the most recent CoC), performance at co-events throughout 2015, performance in last year's masters and previous tournament winners. Four more people would have qualified on these criteria but were excluded for either declining their invitations in 2014 and 2015 or for no longer being on apterous, and they are: Dan McColm, Giles Hutchings, Kirk Bevins, Bob De Caux.

Sign-ups will be open until 7pm on Sunday 6th March, at which point the draw for the qualifying round will take place, and the ninth masters tournament will officially begin!

Happy countdowning!
