Zarte Siempre

Zarte Siempre Is this going to actually finish?

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck You betcha! I'm going to be very strict with deadlines this time, as mentioned in the relevant paragraphs here. You snooze, you lose!

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck YES! Someone noticed! I'm tempted to put you on Table 1 right away... :)

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck Open for about one hour and we already have 8 sign-ups! At this rate there will be 1344 people in the tourney... keep 'em coming!

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck Twelve sign-ups mean that our fourth table is now complete... thanks to all who have joined! By the way, if the number of sign-ups is not a multiple of 3, the bottom table will be appropriately Prunified.

Johnny Canuck Fifth table get! Only three days left for sign-ups... could we get more?

Robert Miller

Robert Miller Heh, 'Prunified'.

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck Less than 24 hours to go now! Can we get one more person? Having two Prunes would make the tourney kind of ugly.

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck Just an hour to go. To everyone who has signed up: you are the Awesome People. Thanks a million.

Johnny Canuck Aaaaand that's a wrap! Sign-ups are closed! First round to be up immediately after the live draw, which you can come out to chat right now and watch.

Tourney round: Mind the Gap: SIGN UP HERE!

<< Sign-up | Round One >>

Notes from the organizer: I've had a strange craving to run a new tourney during the past few weeks. I also remember really enjoying Co:Apterous when it was on (thanks, whoever ran it -- can't remember now!). And thus, yesterday, during a period of somewhat advanced inebriety... the idea for Mind the Gap was born.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OVERVIEW:
Mind the Gap will feature a format similar to a COLIN-style event, but with a different system of organising and ranking players which is intended to generate a bit more entropy and unpredictability.
PRELIMINARY (ROUND-ROBIN) ROUNDS:
Before the start of the Mind the Gap tourney, players will be randomly assigned to three-person "tables" (numbered Table 1, Table 2, etc.) via a draw conducted in Apterous chat. First-round fixtures will then be set up between each possible pair of players within each table. Each player must play the two other people on their table.
What happens between rounds is where this tourney differs from a classic CO-event. Once all matches are played (or the round's deadline passes -- see "DEADLINES" and "UNPLAYED MATCH PROCEDURE" below), everyone in the tourney will be listed and sorted in descending order according to their total MARGINS of victory or defeat over their previous two games. The winner of a match has a positive margin, and the loser of the same match has a negative margin of the same value. The sorted list is then broken sequentially into groups of three. The top group moves to Table 1 for the next round, the next group to Table 2, etc. Only the most recently preceding round will be taken into account when calculating new table assignments -- the margins do not accumulate. If a tie occurs in any list, it will be broken by considering the scores made by the players in the previous round; if still tied, RANDOM.ORG will have to do the job.
Three rounds are planned, although this may be increased if I get a large number of entrants.
***********
Example:
Let's say there are only two tables in the tourney and the results of the current round are as follows:
-- Table 1 --
Britta 51 - 31 Jeff
Jeff 45 - 53 Abed
Abed 55 - 30 Britta
-- Table 2 --
Annie 45 - 49 Troy
Troy 29 - 69 Shirley
Shirley 30 - 56 Annie
On Table 1, Abed beat Jeff by 8 points and Britta by 25, so his total margin is 8 + 25 = +33. On Table 2, Troy beat Annie by 4 points but lost to Shirley by 40, so his total margin is 4 - 40 = -36. Calculating margins in this fashion for all players at both tables and sorting them descending yields the following list:
Abed +33
Annie +22
Shirley +14
Britta -5
Jeff -28
Troy -36
Thus, splitting the list after every third name, Abed, Annie and Shirley will be placed on Table 1 for the next round, while Britta, Jeff and Troy will go to Table 2.
DEADLINES:
Each round will last for TWO WEEKS, beginning on the day it is approved. At the start of each round, I will be opening an Aptomail thread for every individual table to remind you all to play. An extension of up to THREE DAYS beyond these original two weeks is permitted if you come to me in advance (i.e., before the deadline has passed). If the extension period expires, or the original deadline expires with no-one asking for an extension, outstanding matches will be considered UNPLAYED -- see the section below for more details. There will be no accommodations granted to players who ask for them after the original deadline has passed. This isn't The Great Pyramid anymore.
UNPLAYED MATCH PROCEDURE:
If a match is left unplayed after the original round deadline has passed (and neither player has asked for an extension), or if any match is unplayed after the three-day extended deadline, the Aptomail thread for the table on which it occurred will be examined. A panel of judges will decide which of the game's players was more determined to get the game completed. The person who made more of an effort will receive a margin of 0 points (i.e., neutral, average) for the current round, while the less effortful person will automatically be placed at the bottom of the list.
If both players had exceptional circumstances (e.g., if both players were simultaneously ill or on holiday), both players will get a 0 margin, while if neither player even responded to the Aptomail thread at all, both players will be placed at the bottom.
TOURNAMENT FINALS:
Like a typical CO-event, this tournament will conclude with a single-elimination finals bracket, most likely between 8 players (though this can be expanded to 16 if this tourney is surprisingly popular). However, finals seedings will, once again, be calculated by an offbeat method.
Before the finals, all tourney will again be organised into a list, but this time, the list will be sorted via a different criterion -- the sum of the numbers of all the tables to which the player has belonged over the duration of the tourney. Obviously, this sort will be in ascending order instead of descending. For instance, if Finn belonged to Table 3, Table 1 and Table 4 during the first, second and third rounds respectively, he has a table sum of 8 and is placed above Jake, who belonged to Table 1, Table 5 and Table 9 and thus has a table sum of 15.
Any ties in the finals seeding list -- and note that a tie is quite likely here -- will be broken by considering the margins racked up by the players during the FINAL round-robin round only. This provides an incentive to do well during the last round. If still tied, the players' total scores in the FINAL round-robin round will be considered; if still tied, it's over to RANDOM.ORG again.
A Challonge bracket containing all finals matches will be supplied.
GAME FORMAT:
All games in this tournament will be played under the 9-round format, with the exception of the grand final, which will be a 14-rounder.
In the event that any game is decided by one or more tie-break conundrums, these conundrums WILL count in margin determination, with the winner and loser receiving +10 and -10 points respectively. This is intended to provide an incentive to win the match.
Sign-ups will close on 6 October, one week from today. Good luck to all, and may the Apterite who is the most significantly better than other Apterites win!
