Ian Volante

Ian Volante Interesting tactical potential.

George Ford

George Ford THIS LOOKS SO GOOD

Kieran Bray

Kieran Bray This is the best tourney idea I have ever come across! Perfect for thickos like me :-)

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck The deadline for each round will be a strict two weeks, with a three-day extension available to anyone who requests it.

Gerry Tynan

Gerry Tynan Would these have to be played as practice games to avoid messing up the ratings?

Sean D

Sean D This looks delightfully insane. As per Gerry could it be done via practice games?

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck It could. How are the results for practice games recorded?

Callum Todd

Callum Todd They're not, but you can spectate if the players set it up that way in custom games.

The best way I can think to do it is custom 30 or 35 second round Instant games, that would prevent ratings from being affected, but it would mean no letters picking, and the numbers would be messed up.

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck In order to see the results, this would mean that I would have to be present for every game, and games could be happening anytime.

You're still playing to win (i.e., for highest score) rather than to lose. Albeit with radically different rules. Will this be too much of a problem for the ratings?

Callum Todd

Callum Todd I'll just be playing to win so I'm not concerned about ratings.

Johnny Canuck

Johnny Canuck Maybe I could ask Charlie to rejig the system so that these practice games get saved.

Tourney round: Antimatter: Sign-ups & Preliminaries

Qualifier >>

Notes from the organizer: "Antimatter" works almost exactly like a standard Countdown tourney -- except precisely backwards! I credit my inspiration for this tourney to the introduction of the new Deepdown variant... and to the ancient party game of Truth or Dare (which I am recommending that no one here play).

Da Rulez:
- In letters rounds, the normal progression of word scores is reversed. Thus, 9-letter words score 1 point, 8s score 2, 7s score 3, ..., 2s score 8, and 1-letter words will net you 18 points. However, it is still only the player with the LONGEST word that receives these points.
- Numbers rounds work similarly. You receive 5 points for an exact solution; 7 points for between one and five away; and 10 points for between five and ten away. But once again, only the player who is CLOSEST receives the points.
- A conundrum solution during the first three seconds receives 1 point; between 3 and 6 seconds, 2 points; between 6 and 9 seconds, 3 points; and so on up to 10 points for a solve in the last three seconds. Naturally, only the FIRST player to solve receives the points.
- Ignore the score reported by Apterous at the end of the match. I will be posting and periodically updating a file containing the "Antimatterized" results of your matches.

- Signups will close at noon British Standard Time on Sunday, 9 March 2014.
- At that time, players will be seeded based on their Apterous ratings, with the LOWEST rating getting #1 seed. Thus, if the number of applicants is not a power of two, the HIGHEST-rated players will have to take part in a preliminary round.
- The tourney is conducted in a single-elimination style. However, the match formats progress backwards through time. All stages up to and including the last 16 will be done as new 15-rounders; the quarter-finals, as old 15s; the semi-finals, as 14-rounders; and the final will be a 9-rounder.

Good luck! Hope you annihilate the competition!
