Questions about getting the game to work

Why can't I log in to the website?

• You must have forgotten your password. If you need to be reminded, e-mail Charlie and ask politely.

Why can't I get the game to start?

• You may have an issue with Java. Check that you have the latest version installed. The troubleshooting page should prove helpful.

Why does the game window say I can't log in?

• It is likely that the game server might be down for maintenance or in the process of being reset. Again, the troubleshooting page has some useful tips for you.

Questions about playing the game

Who are these weird people called Apterous in my player list?

• These friendly apterees are the computer-controlled bots.

Why was my valid word disallowed?

• If your word is 9 letters or shorter, the chance of an incorrect disallowance is very slim indeed. But the dictionary for 10 letters or longer has massive holes in it. In either case, please let us know in the Bug reports thread.

Why do I keep running out of time to enter my answers?

• The Patience Meters used around the site are designed to be slightly harsh - the idea being that you shouldn't buzz or declare a target unless you have your answer prepared.

How does the rating system work?

• The general rule is that ratings go up when you win and down when you lose, but there is more to learn in the ratings section.
